NIMAS Conversion

NIMAS (National Instructional Materials Accessibility Standard) is a technical standard used by publishers to produce source files (in XML) that may be used to develop multiple specialized formats (such as Braille, DAISY talking books, Large prints or HTML) for readers with disabilities. The NIMAS specification is a subset of the ANSI/NISO Z39.86-2005 standard that is also used as the standard for DAISY 3.0 digital talking books.

Data Esperto has expertise in managing large NIMAS conversion projects as per the requirements for NIMAC compliance.

NIMAS, a U.S. standard for electronic books for the visually impaired – defines a subset of DTBook XML elements. NIMAS documents are validated in accordance with the DTBook DTD i.e. dtbook-2005-3.dtd.

The scope of work undertaken includes the OCR of page images and conversion into NIMAS XML based on dtbook-2005-3.dtd with a data accuracy of 99.95%.

Project Deliverables include the NIMAS file set, which consists of the following:

  • NIMAS Conformant XML file
  • A package file (OPF)
  • A PDF-format copy of title page and ISBN and copyright information pages
  • A full set of content images in SVG, JPG, or PNG format
